Date of News Release: 01/31/11
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that thirteen people died in thirteen separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Jan. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.
Ten of the crashes involved motor vehicles and six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Barren, Estill, Knott, Magoffin, McLean, Metcalfe, Pulaski (2), Todd and Warren counties. The crashes in Knott, McLean and Metcalfe counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Three pedestrian involved crashes occurred in Clark, Jefferson and Lyon counties.
Through Jan. 30, preliminary statistics* indicate that thirty-seven people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is twenty-three less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There were thirty-two motor vehicle fatalities and twenty of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Five of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Five crashes involved pedestrians. A total of seven fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
