KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week(July 26 through Aug. 1)

Date of News Release: 08/02/10

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that 11 people died in 10 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 26 through Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010.

Ten of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles. One was a pedestrian. Two of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.

One double-fatality crash occurred in Harrison County. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Boone, Breckinridge, Daviess, Edmonson, Fleming, Jefferson, Laurel, Nelson and Pike counties.

Through Aug. 1, preliminary statistics* indicate that 410 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 52 fewer than reported for this time period in 2009. Of the 326 motor vehicle fatalities, 165 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 40 motorcycle fatalities, 23 were not wearing helmets. Six of the eight ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. The single scooter fatality was not wearing a helmet. Two bicyclists and 33 pedestrians have been killed. A total of 90 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
