Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (05/03 - 05/09)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in eleven separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, May 3 through Sunday, May 9, 2010.
Eight of the crashes involved motor vehicles and five of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Daviess, Jefferson, Jessamine, Mason, Muhlenberg, Scott and Simpson (2) counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Jefferson County crash.
Two fatal crashes involved motorcycles and occurred in Jefferson and Owsley counties. Both victims were wearing helmets.
One pedestrian involved fatal crash occurred in Johnson County.
Through May 9 preliminary statistics* indicate that 224 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 58 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 188 motor vehicle fatalities and 98 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-one of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Twenty-two fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and 1 involved a scooter. Ten crashes involved a motorcycle and four of those victims were not wearing helmets. Two crashes involved an ATV and one victim was not wearing a helmet. A total of 47 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
