Date of News Release: 01/25/10
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in ten separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, January 18 through Sunday, January 24, 2010.
All of the crashes involved motor vehicles and seven of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Bell, Carter, Fayette (2), Johnson, Lewis, Oldham, Todd and Woodford counties. One crash in Fayette county involved the suspected use of alcohol.
A double-fatality crash occurred in Gallatin county and involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Through January 24, preliminary statistics* indicate that 46 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is the same number of fatalities reported for this time period in 2009. There were 41 motor vehicle fatalities and 26 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Five pedestrians have been killed. Five crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 10 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
