KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Five Deaths on Kentucky Roadways During New Year's Holiday

Date of News Release: 01/04/10

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that five people died in five separate crashes on Kentucky roadways during the New Year's holiday enforcement period (Thursday, December 31, 2009 through Sunday, January 3, 2010). Last year there were four highway fatalities during the same enforcement period.

All of the crashes involved motor vehicles and four of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Oldham, Logan, Pike (2) and Scott counties. The crashes in Logan and Scott county involved the suspected use of alcohol.

Through December 31, preliminary statistics* indicate that 771 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 55 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2008. There were 628 motor vehicle fatalities and 346 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Forty pedestrians and 5 bicyclists have been killed. Eighty fatalities involved a motorcycle and seventeen fatalities involved an ATV. Seventy-three crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 160 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
