(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that sixteen people died in fourteen separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, November 30 through Sunday, December 6, 2009.

Fourteen of the crashes involved motor vehicles and ten victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Hardin (2), Jefferson (2), Laurel, Livingston, Madison, Oldham, Pendleton, Pulaski, Rowan and Shelby counties. The crashes in Hardin, Jefferson and Livingston counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.

A double-fatality crash occurred in Lincoln county and both victims were not wearing seat belts.

One fatal motorcycle crash occurred in Harrison county. A pedestrian crash occurred in Bath county.

Through December 6, preliminary statistics* indicate that 731 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 30 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2008. There were 592 motor vehicle fatalities and 332 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-seven pedestrians and 5 bicyclists have been killed. Eighty fatalities involved a motorcycle, sixteen fatalities involved an ATV and one involved a scooter. Seventy-one crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 156 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
