London Area Trooper and Officers Receive Highway Safety Awards

Date of News Release: 03/26/2013

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) The Kentucky State Police (KSP) honored nine members of the agency who went above and beyond the call of duty to make highways safer in the Commonwealth. The sixth annual "Excellence in Highway Safety" award ceremony was held at KSP Headquarters on March 26, 2013. The awards are based upon the highest number of occupant protection, speed, driving under the influence (DUI), commercial motor vehicle (CMV) citations written and educational programs presented during 2012.

KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer presented the awards to four troopers, three officers and two civilian inspectors.

"I am proud of the troopers and officers who are being honored today and it extends beyond these nine individuals," says Brewer. "It"s really every unit we have that"s out there on our highways, or in our local communities, advocating for highway safety on a daily basis."

Three recipients were from the London Post and CVE Region area.

London-resident Sgt. Steve Walker is a 30-year veteran from the KSP London Post and received the Excellence in Highway Safety Award for DUI Enforcement. Walker removed dangerous drivers from the roadways by making 301 DUI arrests in 2012.

Somerset-resident Ofr. Travis Rogers is a 13-year veteran from the London Region and received the Excellence in Highway Safety Award for highest number of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) citations. Ofr. Rogers wrote 892 CMV citations in 2012.

Barbourville-resident Ofr. Dennis Jackson is a 25-year veteran from the London Region and received the Excellence in Highway Safety Award for highest number of CMV safety inspections. Ofr. Jackson performed 1,174 CMV safety inspections in 2012.

Brewer thanked all the award recipients for their desire to save lives and make the Commonwealth safer for Kentuckians.

"We have a group of officers who go beyond what is normally expected of them and we want to show them how much we appreciate what they do. Their efforts have a direct impact on reducing deaths in Kentucky. They make a real contribution to keeping roadways safer throughout the state," he said.

Other 2012 award recipients included: Sr. Tpr. Nathan Clinkenbeard (Occupant Protection); Tpr. Jason Young (Speed); Insp. William Williams (Safety Inspections); Ofr. Christopher Duke (CMV Out of Service Rate); Insp. Wesley Garmon (CMV Out of Service Rate); and Tpr. Endre Samu (Community Education).

"The men and women who serve this agency every day by patrolling our roadways made an incredible impact in 2012. Statewide, KSP troopers and CVE officers wrote 89,784 speed citations, 44,979 seat belt/restraint citations, 28,242 CMV citations, made 8,694 DUI arrests and provided local communities with 504 educational programs pertaining to public safety. All of these officers are to be commended," added Brewer.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
