Tanker Spill on KY 3415 in Floyd County

(VIRGIE, KY) -- On Monday February 6, 2012, Post 09 Pikeville received a 911 call of a collision involving a single commerical vehicle on KY 3415 in the Robinson Creek community of Floyd County.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Karl Ashley, 58 years of age, was operating a 2000 white Mack tractor pulling a tank trailer northbound on KY 3415 when he lost control. The vehicle then overturned off of the roadway. The tractor-trailer came to final rest in the creek. The tanker leaked a powder substance, which was a premixed fuel and Ammonium Nitrate blasting agent. Both northbound and southbound directions of KY 3415 were closed down. Additionally, a one-half mile evacuation of the imediate area was organized as a result of the chemical spill.

No one was injured from collision or from the spill.

Kentucky State Police Officer Gary Mullins, Officer Marty Combs, Officer Barry Coleman and Sgt. Keith Justice conducted the investigation as a team. They were assisted on scene by Pike County Emergency Management and Shelby Valley Rescue Squad.

The collision remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Officer Kevin Belcher.
