Six Vehicle Collision in McCracken County

Date of News Release: 05/13/2009

(Paducah, Ky.) -- A collision involving six vehicles, including a semi, closed a portion of US 62 near Old Mayfield Road in Paducah on Wednesday afternoon. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division of Kentucky State Police responded to the collision just after 12:00 PM. Initial investigation showed that a white Chevrolet pickup operated by Laura Helton, 37 of Paducah, was traveling west on the Beltline overpass (US 62) near Old Mayfield Road when she struck the right curb of the roadway. Ms. Helton's vehicle then traveled across the roadway into oncoming, eastbound traffic. A red Jeep, operated by Doyle Lewis, 68 of Metropolis Illinois, was traveling east and struck Ms. Helton's vehicle. Mr. Lewis's Jeep then struck a green Chevrolet pickup operated by Ladina Gray, 44 of Princeton. This collision caused the red Jeep to cross the center line into westbound traffic. The jeep struck a semi operated by Ricky Free, 49 of Benton. The impact caused a wheel to break off of the semi. The wheel rolled into two vehicles causing moderate damage to each. Laura Helton and Doyle Lewis were both transported to Western Baptist Hospital for possible injuries. All parties involved were wearing their seatbelt. The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours. KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement was assisted at the scene by the Paducah Police Department, Paducah Fire Department, and Mercy Regional EMS. The investigation is continuing by Officer Mark Townsend with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.
