Johnson County Man Fatally Injured in Standoff with Police
KSP Troopers and Johnson County Deputies involved.

Oil Springs, KY.(March 6, 2018) – A Johnson County man died Monday evening after a stand-off with police officers escalated to gunfire exchange. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville responded to a residence on KY 825 in the Oil Springs community, to assist deputies with Johnson County Sheriff’s Department on a barricade situation.
Police personnel at the scene attempted to negotiate with a man who had barricaded himself inside a residence with a firearm. The individual discharged a firearm several times inside and outside of the residence, before opening the front door and firing at officers. Two KSP cruisers, being utilized as cover by Troopers, were struck several times, at which time Troopers returned fire. Kentucky State Police’s Special Response Team (SRT) responded to the scene to assist. SRT personnel utilized robotics and a K-9 dog to locate the man inside, who was found to be unresponsive. 35 year old Steven Dalton of Oil Springs, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Johnson County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy will be performed at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort. Lieutenant Claude Little with the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading this investigation, in collaboration with KSP Post 9 investigators.
