Date of News Release: 1/8/2018
HAZARD, KY.(January 6, 2018) – A Perry County man was killed late Friday night when the truck he was driving crashed into a residence. Dispatchers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 received a call from a man at around 10:45 p.m., advising that a car had struck his home and two people appeared to be injured inside the vehicle. Troopers with Post 13 responded to the scene on Highway 476 in the Ary community. Perry County EMS and Fisty Fire and Rescue were also called to the crash site.
The preliminary investigation of this crash determined that Eric Reed, 35 of Hazard, was operating a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck on KY 476, when he failed to negotiate a curve on the roadway. The truck traveled over an embankment where it collided with a mobile home, trapping the occupants of the vehicle inside. Fisty Fire and Rescue personnel had to remove both by mechanical means. Eric Reed was pronounced deceased at the scene by Perry County Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Combs. The passenger in the truck, 35 year old Kelda Wells of Ary, was air-lifted to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment of apparent non-life threatening injuries. Wells was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, while Eric Reed was not. No one inside the home was injured.
No autopsy will be performed, and toxicology results from the driver, which are routinely collected during fatal crash investigations, are pending. Tpr. Wade Adams with KSP Post 13 is leading this investigation.
