Armed Subject Shot by Trooper in Magoffin County

(Gunlock, Ky.) - The Kentucky State Police Post 9 is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on January 18, 2015 in Magoffin County. Troopers from Post 9 responded to the Gunlock community to assist the Magoffin County Sheriff's Office with serving an arrest warrant on Carter Ray Castle.
Upon the officers' arrival, Carter Ray Castle was located outside his residence and revealed he was in possession of a gun. Officers attempted to negotiate with Castle at the scene. A deputy with Magoffin County and a Trooper both deployed tasers, but the tasers were not effective. Castle then retrieved his gun and turned toward the officers. A Trooper at the scene fired his weapon and struck Castle. Castle was airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Virginia for medical treatment.
On January 19, 2015, Castle succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Lieutenant Jennifer Sandlin with Kentucky State Police.
