Rowan County Drug Arrest

(Morehead, KY) - On July 10, 2105 at 3:58 a.m. Trooper Bryantt Furman conducted a traffic stop on Benjamin T. Russell, 36, of Morehead for an expired registration plate. After Russell stopped his vehicle, Joseph. W. McCarty, age 39 of Owingsville, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. After a short foot pursuit McCarty was apprehended and searched. During the search Trooper Furman and Deputy Hall found approximately 300 grams of synthetic drugs located, suspected to bath salts, on McCarty. McCarty was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Synthetic Drugs 1st Offense, Possession of Synthetic Drugs, Drug Paraphernalia-Buy/Possess, Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree (Foot), Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct 1st Degree, Menacing and Execution of Bench Warrant. Russell was arrested and charged with Operating Motor Vehicle Under the Influence 1st Offense, No Registration Plate, No Registration Receipt, Failure to Maintain Insurance 1st Offense, Failure to Wear Seat Belt, Failure to Notify Address Change to Department of Transportation, Operating on a Suspended of Revoked License and Execution of Bench Warrant. Russell and McCarty were lodged in the Rowan County Detention Center. Trooper Furman and Deputy Hall were assisted by Trooper David James. The incident remains under investigation by Trooper Furman.
