Update- KSP involved in Lyon County Shooting

(Hickory, KY.) - The Kentucky State Police is continuing their investigation into the shooting of John C. Smith 51, of Eddyville, KY. Smith was shot, after he displayed a weapon and laser pointing device towards Troopers. Smith was transferred out of ICU and into a regular room where he remains in stable condition at Lourdes Hospital for his injury.
Senior Trooper Eric C. Fields, a 7 year veteran with the Kentucky State Police, fired an agency issued firearm at Smith. Senior Trooper Fields has been assigned to the Mayfield Post since 2008. He is currently assigned to Marshall County, and was assisting other units on the execution of a search warrant in Lyon County. Before coming to the Kentucky State Police, Senior Trooper Fields was a police officer for Tennessee Valley Authority for approximately 6 years. Senior Trooper Fields remains on paid administrative leave, pursuant to KSP policy.
KSP Detectives recovered 30 guns from the residence, one of which has been confirmed to be stolen, and over $14,000 in cash. KSP Detective Donald Bowman is continuing his drug investigation and will be adding additional charges at a later time. KSP investigative Lieutenant Trent Weaver from Post 1, Lieutenant Lonnie Bell from Post 16, and Lieutenant Brinton Ford from Post 2 are continuing their investigation into the shooting.

KSP involved in Lyon County Shooting

(Eddyville, KY.) – During the early morning hours on Saturday May 9, 2015 the Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant at a residence on Bryson Road, in Eddyville, KY. Trooper's knocked on the door, identified themselves as police officers and made their presence known. John C. Smith, 51 of Eddyville, came to the door and pointed a handgun and a laser pointing device at the Troopers. After Mr. Smith refused several verbal commands to drop his weapon he was shot by a Trooper and was struck in the abdomen area. Mr. Smith was transported by the Lyon County EMS to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY where he has undergone surgery for his injury and is recovering in ICU.
KSP recovered approximately 10 ounces of Chrystal Meth, with a street value of $18,000 from the residence along with several guns, and a large amount of cash. Mr. Smith will be charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (2nd offense) methamphetamine more than 2 grams with a firearm enhancement, Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Patricia A. Kilgore, 41 of Eddyville was charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (1st offense) methamphetamine more than 2 grams with a firearm enhancement, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Kilgore was lodged at the Caldwell County Jail.
Detective Donald Bowman continues his drug investigation and Detective Lieutenant Trent Weaver along with Lieutenants from two other KSP posts are continuing their investigation into the Trooper involved shooting. KSP was assisted on the scene by the Eddyville Police Department, Lyon County Sheriff's Office, and the Marshall County Sherriff's Office.
