Knott County Infant Dead, Parents Arrested

(Hindman, KY) - The parents of a two month old Hindman infant are in jail after the child's death Wednesday afternoon. The father of the child placed a 911 call to Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard at 1:19 p.m., on April 15, advising that he had discovered the child unresponsive inside the home. Trans Star EMS, Knott County Sheriff's Department, and KSP officers were called to the scene. Chief Deputy Robbie Slone arrived on the scene first and took over CPR attempts by the father until EMT's arrived. The child was then transported to Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital where Perry County Deputy Coroner John Collett pronounced her deceased at 2:33 p.m.
KSP Post 13 detectives and troopers initially responded to the residence on Marybelle Lane in Hindman, before contacting the parents at the hospital. Joseph Newsome age 19 and 21 year old Ashley Newsome, both of Hindman, were each charged with one count of Manslaughter 1st degree. Both were lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail pending court proceedings in Knott County.
An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort. Detective Chris Collins with KSP Post 13 is leading this investigation.
