Date of News Release: 01/26/2015
(Hazard, KY) - A Hazard man died as the result of a shooting incident last Saturday morning in Knott County. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard initially responded to the Hazard ARH Hospital after receiving a call at 4:42 a.m., that a gun shot victim was being treated in the emergency room. When the first Trooper arrived at approximately 5:27 a.m., he was advised that the victim, 38 year old Johnny Collins of Hazard, had died.
Further investigation into this incident determined that just before 4:00 a.m., Johnny Collins and an acquaintance, Jimmy Dunn, traveled to a residence on Perkins Madden Road, in the Irishman community of Knott County. Jamie Honeycutt, who lives at this residence, advised investigators that he heard a noise in a bedroom of his home, and discovered a man coming through a window. Jamie Honeycutt fired one shot at the intruder, who retreated through the window and over an embankment. Johnny Collins was later located on Perkins Madden Road by Jimmy Dunn, who observed that Collins had an apparent gunshot wound. Jimmy Dunn transported Johnny Collins to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased by Deputy Perry County Coroner John Collett.
No criminal charges have been filed at this time against Jamie Honeycutt concerning the shooting incident. However, he was charged with one count of Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon, and was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail. Detective Billy Pollard is continuing with this investigation.
