Glendale Firefighter Killed on I-65

(GLENDALE, KY.) - The Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown responded to a fatality accident this morning on Southbound I-65 at the 87 mile marker. The Glendale Volunteer Fire Dept responded to a vehicle fire at the same location at approximately 2:54 A.M. EST involving a van that was fully engulfed on the right shoulder of the Interstate. At approximately 3:28 A.M. EST KSP Post 4 received a call of an accident involving a tractor trailer and a fire truck. Glendale Fireman Jonathan E. French (25), of Glendale, Ky. was struck by a tractor trailer driven by John M. Hatton (44) of Covington, Ky, while attempting to extinguish the initial vehicle fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin Co. Coroner. Firefighter Lisa A. French (43), of Eastview, Ky. was also struck and suffered serious injuries. She was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital. The operator of the tractor trailer was uninjured. The accident is currently under investigation by KSP accident reconstructionist Trooper Bryan Washer. KSP is being assisted at the scene by the Central Hardin Fire Dept, The Elizabethtown Fire Dept, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Hardin Co. EMS, and the Hardin Co. Coroner's Office.
