Fatal Accident on US 68 East

Elkton, KY (Todd County) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating a two vehicle, collision that resulted in a fatality on US 68 East and West Main St in Elkton.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Virges A. Mayes, 83, of Elkton, and his passenger Joyce Mayes, 81, of Elkton, were traveling in a 2002 Chevrolet S10 northbound on West Main Street. Charles W. Martin of Wickliffe KY was operating a 2009 Toyota Venza eastbound on US 68. Mr. Mayes attempted to cross US 60 and entered the path of Mr. Martin. Mr. Martin's vehicle then struck Mr. Mayes' vehicle in the driver's side causing it to overturn. Mr. Mayes succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was pronounced deceased by Bob Whittlesey, Todd County Coroner. Mrs. Mays was flown from the scene to Skyline Hospital in Nashville for treatment to her injuries. Mr. Martin was transported to Logan Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment to his injuries. The collision remains under investigation by Trooper Michael Dennis. Trooper Dennis was assisted at the scene by Sergeant Brian Duvall, Elkton Police Department, Todd County Sheriff Office, and Todd County Fire/Rescue.
