Fatal Collision On Grapevine Road

Madisonville, KY (Hopkins County) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating a two-vehicle, fatality collision that occurred on Grapevine Road at the intersection of the southbound on-ramp to the Pennyrile Parkway, on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at 4:45 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Dakota Matheny, 18, of Dixon, was operating 2000 GMC pickup truck on Grapevine Road. He was attempting to make a left turn onto the southbound on-ramp of the Pennyrile Parkway. Marbin Benites, 27, of Madisonville, was operating 2004 Mazda passenger car westbound on Grapevine Road.

As Mr. Matheny was attempting to turn left, he failed to see Mr. Benites' vehicle approaching. Mr. Matheny's pickup truck struck the driver's side of Mr. Benites' vehicle. Mr. Matheny's vehicle came to rest in the roadway. Mr. Benites' vehicle came to rest off the westbound shoulder of the roadway.

Mr. Matheny, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured. There were no passengers in Mr. Matheny's vehicle.

Mr. Benites was transported via ambulance to Baptist Health Madisonville and later transported to Deaconess in Evansville, IN.

A passenger in Mr. Benites' vehicle, Donidona Ramirez, 23, of Madisonville, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hopkins County Coroner, Dennis Mayfield. Another passenger, Olman Vasquez, 20, of Madisonville, was flown to Deaconess for treatment. His third passenger, Manuel Esposito, 19, of Madisonville, was not injured. Mr. Benites and his passengers were not wearing seatbelts.

Trooper Nathan Craft is investigating the collision. The Madisonville Police Department, the Hopkins County Sheriff's Department, the Earlington Volunteer Fire Department, Medical Center Ambulance Service, and the Hopkins County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene.
