Fatality Collision On Island Ford Road

Madisonville, KY (Hopkins County) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating a fatality collision that occurred on Island Ford Road, just east of the Pennyrile Parkway, on Friday, July 11, 2014, at approximately 12:05 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Jerry L. Simmons, 54, of Madisonville KY, was riding a bicycle eastbound on Island Ford Road traveling along the centerline. Mr. Simmons attempted to cross from the center of the roadway to the westbound shoulder. As Mr. Simmons was transversing the westbound lane, he crossed directly into the travel path of Brock M. Dunbar, 29, of Hanson, KY, who was operating a 2001 Acura passenger car westbound on Island Ford Road.

The two collided in the westbound lane causing Mr. Simmons to be thrown from the bicycle. Jerry Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene by Hopkins County Deputy Coroner Wayne Burton. Mr. Simmons was not wearing a helmet or reflective equipment during the collision. Mr. Dunbar, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.

Trooper Nathan Craft is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Trooper Joseph Bartolotti, the Madisonville Police Department, Medical Center Ambulance Service and the Hopkins County Sheriff Office.
