Argument Turns Deadly at Knott County Trail Ride

(Soft Shell, KY) - An argument between two Floyd County men turned deadly at the Knott County Trail Ride early Sunday morning. Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a call at approximately 12:07 a.m., advising that a man had been shot while attending the Trail Ride event. KSP troopers and deputies with the Knott County Sheriff's Department, who were working the event, responded to the altercation.

It was determined that the two men, Zachary Murphy age 19 of Langley, and 21 year old Miles Hamilton of Wayland had been involved in a physical altercation. After being separated, Miles Hamilton retrieved a handgun and shot Zachary Murphy once, fatally wounding him. Murphy was pronounced deceased at the scene by Knott County Coroner Jeff Blair. Miles Hamilton initially fled on foot, but returned to the scene several hours later and turned himself in without incident.

Miles Hamilton was charged with one count of Murder, and was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard. This incident remains under investigation by Detective Chris Collins of KSP Post 13.
