Torture of an Animal arrest in Harlan County

(Baxter, Ky.) - On March 28, 2014 at 12:48 p.m Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call from Brenda Hinton saying that her husband Rex Hinton wanted to kill himself. Tpr. Jimmy Halcomb and Tpr. Kevin Miller were dispatched to the residence on Little Shepherd Trail in Baxter. Before troopers arrived at the home, Mr. Hinton and his wife became involved in a verbal argument. Mr. Hinton grabbed the family cat and threw it into a wood burning stove and slammed the door. Once Tpr. Halcomb arrived at the residence he was met by the ambulance. The ambulance crew stated they had Mr. Hinton in the ambulance and they were taking him to the Harlan Hospital for mental evaluation, and medical treatment and needed a trooper to follow them.

Tpr. Halcomb began an investigation and obtained an arrest warrant for Torture of an Animal. After treatment from the Harlan Hospital, Mr. Hinton was then transported to the Hazard Psychiatric Center where he was admitted. On April 8, 2014 Mr. Hinton was released from Hazard Psychiatric Center and the arrest warrant was served on him.

Rex Hinton, 48, of Baxter was arrested and charged with Torture of an Animal. He is lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
