(ELIZABETHTOWN, KY.) - The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckenridge, Larue, and Grayson. The West Region covers 8 post areas. They are: Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4, Post 5, Post 12, Post 15, and Post 16.

We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through December and the rest of 2013 looking for impaired drivers, unrestrained motorists, and other traffic violations at various locations throughout our post area.

For the month of November 2013, Post 04 Troopers and Detectives wrote a total of 1258 citations. We removed 22 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 437 speeders. 99 violators were charged with failure to wear a seatbelt and 3 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 85 crashes and conducted 1556 vehicle inspections. 501 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 134 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 995 citizenís complaints. We were involved in 616 special details and conducted over 7 community programs which reached over 1500 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 62 criminal cases, made 184 criminal arrests, and served over 84 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 560 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. Additionally, we conducted over 176 school and business security checks throughout the entire Post 4 area. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 6238 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.

In addition to the Trooper and Detective monthly activity, Post 4 dispatchers logged over 1715 data entries while still answering hundreds of calls from citizens in our area.

Through Dec. 8, preliminary statistics* indicate that 598 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 107 fewer than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 463 motor vehicle fatalities, 232 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 72 motorcycle fatalities, 44 were not wearing a helmet. Ten of the 10 ATV fatalities were not wearing a helmet. Forty-nine pedestrians and three bicycle riders have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 133 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Dec. 8, Kentucky has had 74 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
