Single-Vehicle Injury Collision on Interstate 69

St. Charles, KY (Hopkins County) - The Kentucky State Police investigated a single-vehicle, injury collision that occurred on Interstate 69, at approximately the 100 mile-marker, on Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at 5:39 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Larry J. Mahaffey, 63 of Calvert City KY, was operating a 2000 Toyota Camry southbound on Interstate 69 when he attempted to avoid a deer in the roadway. The vehicle overturned in the median, crossed into the northbound lanes, and came to final rest facing west on the outside shoulder of the northbound lanes.

Mr. Mahaffey and his passenger, Deborah Mahaffey, 61 also of Calverty City, KY were transported via ambulance to Baptist Health Madisonville for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Mahaffey were wearing seatbelts.

Trooper Joseph Bartolotti investigated the collision. The South Hopkins Fire Department and Med Center EMS assisted at the scene.
