Post 2 Telecommunicator Receives Award
Date of News Release: 10/29/2013
Madisonville, KY. - On Friday, October 25, 2013, twenty-three civilian employees were honored by the Kentucky State Police at a ceremony at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort.
KSP Post 2 Telecommunicator II Miria Thomas received the Police Communications Support Award. She was one of four KSP telecommunicators to receive this award.
She received this award for her role in negotiating with a suicidal subject in May of 2013. KSP Post 2 Madisonville received a call from a subject who stated that he was feeling suicidal. Troopers from Post 2 responded to an abandoned apartment where a subject had forced entry and was behaving erratically. The subject stated he wanted to speak with Telecommunicator Thomas as he had spoken with her on previous occasions when he had called Post 2, and if anyone else tried to enter the apartment he would harm himself. Mrs. Thomas, who was off-duty at the time, was contacted at her residence and offered to speak with the subject. After speaking with Mrs. Thomas, the subject relinquished his weapons and exited the apartment. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Mrs. Thomas is a 15-year veteran of the agency. During her career, she has been assigned to both the Henderson and Madisonville Posts. She currently resides in Earlington with her family.
