One Dead in Perry County Fatal Collision

Date of News Release: 12/18/2013

(Hazard, KY) - On Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at approximately 11:33 p.m., Kentucky State Police Troopers, who were patrolling KY 80 in Hazard, observed a passenger car, a 1997 Plymouth Breeze, traveling at an apparent high rate of speed, in the eastbound lane of KY 80. As troopers turned in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop, the car crossed the westbound land, went onto the shoulder of the roadway, and struck a rock cliff. The car then overturned and came to a final rest on the highway.

The driver of the car, Ryan Cress, age 29 of Jeff, KY, and a passenger were transported to the Hazard ARH Medical Center. The passenger, Deborah Ann Cress, age 31 of Vicco, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Ryan Cress was later transferred, by Medivac, to Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN, where he is listed in stable condition.

No seatbelts were in use and toxicology reports are pending for this collision, which remains under investigation by Tpr. Brandon Thomas.
