KSP Investigates A Collision on US Highway 25E

(Pineville, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police responded to an injury collision on Tuesday evening involving a commercial vehicle.

The accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. in the Pineville community of Bell County. According to the investigation by Trooper Joey Brigmon, Keith Simpson, age 53, of Speedwell, TN was operating a 2002 Ford box truck pulling a trailer loaded with logs. Mr. Simpson was traveling southbound on US Highway 25E near the junction of KY 190 at Pineville. Forester Helton, age 74, of Bledsoe, KY was traveling eastbound on KY 190 in a 1998 Ford pickup. Mr. Helton pulled into the path of the Mr. Simpson, causing Mr. Simpson to strike the driver side of the pickup. The pickup received severe damage, but the occupants, Mr. Helton and James Helton, were lucky to escape without injury; however, Hazel Thompson, age 34, of Bledsoe who was a passenger, riding in the extended cab portion of the pickup, was transported to Pineville Community Hospital. Ms. Thompson was then airlifted to the Holsten Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN by AirEvac Life Team 88 from Harlan. The Heltons were wearing a seatbelt; however, Ms. Thompson was not. Mr. Simpson was uninjured.

Kentucky Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officer, Wendell Hunter Jr, also responded to the scene to conduct a post collision inspection on the commercial vehicle which was being operated by Simpson. No charges were filed. Investigation continues by Trooper Joey Brigmon.
