Lexington Woman Killed in a Collision on the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway

(Adele, KY) -- On Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at 4:29 p.m., Kentucky State Police Post 8 Morehead was notified by Morgan County Dispatch of a two vehicle injury accident on the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway near mile marker 63 at the Morgan/Magoffin county line. Mabel Swafford, 68 of Lexington, was traveling eastbound on the parkway approaching a construction zone. Ms. Swafford was operating a silver 2004 Saturn Vue when she failed to negotiate a curve in the road, losing control, resulting in the vehicle becoming perpendicular in the westbound lane. Mrs. Swafford was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced deceased on scene by Morgan County Coroner, Raymond Vancleve. Tyler Shepherd, 21 of Salyersville, was traveling westbound on the mountain parkway operating a white 1998 Dodge Ram pick-up truck. Mr. Shepherd was wearing his seatbelt. The front of the Dodge Ram struck the passenger side of the Saturn Vue, causing both vehicles to come to a final rest in the eastbound lane. Kentucky State Police Post 8 Troopers Mike McPherson and Joseph Zalone as well as KSP Units from Pikeville Post 9 responded to the scene. Also on scene was Morgan County Coroner Raymond Vancleve, Morgan County EMS responded and transported Mr. Shepherd to Morgan County ARH for non life threatening injures. Morgan County Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and provided traffic control. The accident remains under investigation by KSP Post 8 Trooper M. McPherson.
