Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post, Conduct Death Investigation in Garrard County

(Lancaster, KY) – On Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 4:39 p.m. EDT, the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post was contacted by the Bluegrass 911 Center in Lancaster about a body found in a field off KY Highway 39 / Crab Orchard Road in Garrard County.

Troopers responded to the scene and spoke to Steven Crouch, who had been clearing a field with a tractor powered mower, when he first observed the body.

Initial investigation revealed that Floyd Smith, 55 years old of Crab Orchard, KY, died sometime prior to September 16, 2012. Mr. Smith was identified through medical records during an autopsy in Frankfort. Cause of death has not been determined.

Detective Monte Owens is the investigating officer and was assisted at the scene by Sergeant Sonny Dunaway, Detective Rodney Wren, Trooper Frank Thornberry, Trooper Greg Newman, Deputy Brandon Conley, Garrard County EMS and Garrard County Coroners Office.
