Stanford Police Department Officer Involved Shooting Investigation

(Stanford, KY) -- Monday, August 20, 2012 at 2:47 pm EST the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post, was notified of an officer involved shooting at the Stanford Wal-Mart. Troopers responded to the scene to render assistance to the local police department.

The initial investigation revealed that a Wal-Mart Loss Prevention Employee had detained a suspected shoplifter when the suspect brandished a firearm and fled the store. Stanford Police Officer Tim Morris, who was responding to the scene, observed the suspect in the parking lot. Prior to the officer exiting his vehicle the suspect allegedly fired on the Stanford Officer. The Stanford Officer was able to exit his vehicle and returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Detective Monty Owens is the investigating officer and was assisted at the scene by Sergeant Sonny Dunaway, Sergeant Chad Mills, Trooper David Fugate, Trooper Eric Taylor, Trooper Jason Carpenter, Trooper Frank Thornberry, Trooper Chris Damron, Trooper Joshua Chenault, Stanford Police Department, Stanford EMS.
