UPDATE: I-71 South Shut Down for Fatal Crash

Date of News Release: 12/07/2012

(Campbellsburg, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police has identified the driver in this morning's (12/07/2012) fatal tractor trailer crash on I-71 as Johnny Sherard, 54 years old from Anderson, SC. Preliminary investigation shows that the tractor trailer driven by Sherard left the right side of the interstate and struck the end of a bridge overpass. The tractor trailer became seperated and the truck portion landed on Tapering Point Road, below I-71. The trailer stopped in the south bound lanes of the interstate. Sherard, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene by the Gallatin County Coroner. The wet roadway surface is believed to be a factor in the crash. A crack in the overpass caused by the crash was examined by the Kentucky State Road Department and was found to not have caused any structural damage.

Tpr. Brandon Maupin, an accident reconstructionist, is leading the ongoing investigation. Tpr. Maupin was assisted at the scene by the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department, Gallatin County EMS, and Glencoe Fire and Rescue.
