Infant Killed in Carroll County Crash

(Carrollton, KY) – Troopers from KSP Post 5 responded to a fatal collision at 9:13 this morning (05/19/2012) in Carroll County. Investigation by Troopers showed that the vehicle, driven by a 17 year old juvenile, was traveling on 11th Street near the rear entrance to General Butler State Park. The vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Two passengers, 18 year old Jaquolin Valoria Villalva Rocha of Warsaw and 22 year old Leonardo Lopez Sanchez of Louisville were flown by Air Methods, Inc. to the University of Louisville Hospital for life-threatening injuries. Rocha's infant child who was in the vehicle was taken to Carroll County Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead by Carroll County Coroner David Wilhoite. Neither passenger was weaing a seat belt and the infant was not in a child restraint. Investigation showed that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The juvenile driver was taken into custody and charged with Manslaughter, DUI 1st, Failure to Use Child Restraint, No Operator's License, Failure to Maintain Insurance, Failure to Wear Seat belt, and two counts of Wanton Endangerment. The driver was lodged at the Campbell County Juvenile Detention Center.
Trooper Dusty Corbin is leading the ongoing investigation. Trooper Corbin was assisted at the scene by the Carrollton Police Department and Carroll County EMS.
