Elizabethtown Post Reports Activity For The Month Of September

(ELIZABETHTOWN, KY)- The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckinridge, Larue, and Grayson.

We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through October and the rest of 2012 looking for impaired drivers and restraint violations at various locations throughout our post area.

For the month of September 2012, Post 04 Troopers wrote a total of 2,191 citations. We removed 66 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 980 speeders. 191 violators were charged for failure to wear a seatbelt and five citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 88 crashes and conducted 3,209 vehicle inspections. 1,137 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 204 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1,221 citizenís complaints. We were involved in 709 special details and conducted over 30 community programs which reached over 1,500 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 67 criminal cases, made 195 criminal arrests, and served over 80 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 641 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 9,972 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.

Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in nine separate crashes on Kentuckyís roadways from Monday, Sept. 17 through Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012.

Five of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles and three were not wearing seat belts. One single fatality crash occurred in each of the following counties: Grant, Grayson, Jefferson, McCreary and Meade. The fatality in Jefferson County involved the use of alcohol.

One fatality was the result of a motorcycle crash in Jefferson County.

Two fatalities were the result of ATV crashes: one in Fayette County and one in Perry County. Both victims were not wearing helmets. The fatality in Perry County involved the use of alcohol.

One bicycle rider was killed in Daviess County.

Through Sept. 23, preliminary statistics* indicate that 523 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is three more than reported for this time period in 2011. Of the 404 motor vehicle fatalities, 230 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 62 motorcycle fatalities, 32 were not wearing a helmet. Nine of the 10 ATV fatalities were not wearing a helmet. Forty-two pedestrians, one scooter/moped rider and four bicycle riders have been killed. A total of 92 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
