Date of News Release: 09/18/2012
(FLAHERTY, KY) – On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at approximately 6:56 a.m. ET Post 4 received a call from Meade County Dispatch advising of a fatality crash on US 60 at the intersection of KY 144 in Meade County. An investigation by Post 4 reconstructionist, Tpr. Brad Riley revealed that a 1994 Mack truck driven by 41-year-old Thomas A. Russell of Lebanon Junction, KY, was westbound on US 60 and approaching the intersection of KY 144. 42-year-old Melissa Wilkins of Brandenburg, KY was operating a 1999 Saturn and was southbound on KY 144. The Mack truck failed to stop for a red light and struck the Saturn, who had a green light, in the driver's door. After striking the Saturn, the Mack truck struck a 2011 Ford Taurus driven by 49-year-old Gregory Willingham of Irvington. He was eastbound and stopped at the red light on US 60. After striking the Taurus, the Mack truck struck a 2007 Mazda driven by 41-year-old Rebecca Dean of Hardinsburg who was also eastbound on US 60 approaching the red light. Dean was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released. The Mack truck then continued southwest and came to final rest in a corn field facing west. After being struck by the Mack truck, the Saturn was pushed into a 1997 Dodge pickup driven by 52-year-old Allen Thomas of Guston, KY. He was also eastbound and stopping for the red light on US 60.
Melissa Wilkins was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported and all occupants involved in this crash were wearing their seatbelts. Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in this crash and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
