McHenry Woman Killed In Crash in Grayson County

(CANEYVILLE, KY) – On Thursday, August 09, 2012 at approximately 11:37 p.m. ET Grayson County Sheriff's Deputies requested a KSP crash reconstructionist respond to the 89 mile marker on the Western Kentucky Parkway. The investigation revealed that a 1998 Pontiac Firebird being driven by 26-year-old Sara B. Hatton of McHenry, KY was westbound on the WK Parkway when for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway traveled approximately 163 feet in the grass median and struck the end of a guardrail. The vehicle spun counter clockwise and came to final rest in the passing lane on the westbound side.
Bennett W. Smith, 62, of Summerville, Alabama, was also westbound on the WK Parkway and was operating a semi tractor trailer and was passing another semi when he saw the Firebird in the roadway. Smith stated that he tried to avoid the car but was unable to do so. Smith also stated that he saw the occupant of the vehicle trying to run away as he struck her vehicle. The Semi struck her vehicle which caused her vehicle to strike her. Hatton was thrown over 150 feet before landing on the pavement on the eastbound side. Hatton was taken by the Grayson County EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center where she died from her wounds at approximately 11:54 p.m. ET. The tractor trailer then struck another tractor trailer causing minor damage to its side. The Smith vehicle then lost control and jackknifed in the roadway covering both directions of travel. No one else was injured in this crash. This crash is being investigated by MTPR Norman Chaffins. The Western Kentucky Parkway was shut down for approximately 5 hours.
