Elizabethtown Post Reports Activity For The Month Of July, 2012

(ELIZABETHTOWN, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckinridge, Larue, and Grayson.
We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through August and the rest of 2012, looking for impaired drivers and restraint violations at various locations throughout our post area.
For the month of July 2012, Post 04 Troopers wrote a total of 1,971 citations. We removed 67 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 758 speeders. 183 violators were charged for failure to wear a seatbelt. 11 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 88 crashes and conducted 2,804 vehicle inspections. 1,060 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 291 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1,481 citizen's complaints. We were involved in 693 special details and conducted over 30 community programs which reached over 2,000 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 70 criminal cases, made 231 criminal arrests, and served over 130 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 754 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged 10,306 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.
Preliminary statistics* indicate that five people died in five separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 23 through Sunday, July 29, 2012.
Four of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles and none were wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was riding a motorcycle.
Single-fatality motor vehicle crashes occurred in Gallatin, Hopkins, Jackson and Woodford counties. The motorcycle fatality occurred in Trimble County.
Through July 29, preliminary statistics* indicate that 420 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 24 more than reported for this time period in 2011. Of the 335 motor vehicle fatalities, 189 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 48 motorcycle fatalities, 26 were not wearing a helmet. Two of the three ATV fatalities were not wearing a helmet. Thirty-two pedestrians, one scooter/moped rider and one bicycle rider have been killed. A total of 69 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
