Body Of Missing Louisville Woman Has Been Identified

(BRANDENBURG, KY) – On Wednesday, July 4th, 2012 at approximately 3:19 p.m. KSP Post 4 received a call from the Department of Fish and Wildlife requesting that we investigate a missing person by the name of Carrie L. Ruffra. Mrs. Ruffra was reported missing to the Department of Fish and Wildlife by her mother and stepfather who live in Pennsylvania at 11:00 a.m. on July 4th. At approximately 11:30 a.m. Mrs. Ruffra's white 2007 Nissan XTerra was located at the boat ramp in Otter Creek Park. The last known contact Mrs. Ruffra had was with her husband at around 8:00 p.m. on July 3rd, 2012. Further investigation revealed that at approximately 1:00 a.m. on July 4th, campers at the park noticed Mrs. Ruffra's vehicle parked at the boat ramp with no one in it.
On Wednesday, July 4th several K-9 units, Fire and EMS, KSP, Louisville Metro Air Unit and members of the Department of Fish and Wildlife searched the area on land and in the water near the area where her SUV was located. On July 5, KSP had been processing some of Mrs. Ruffra's belongings and attempting to determine the authenticity of the items found.
On Friday, July 06, 2012 at approximately 9:20 a.m. Department of Fish and Wildlife officials notified Post 4 that a body had been discovered in the Ohio River near the Otter Creek boat ramp. At approximately 9:57 a.m. the body was recovered from the water and transported to the Louisville Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy and to determine the identity. This investigation is ongoing and further details will be released once the body is identified and the medical examiner's report is made available to us.
On July 06, 2012, the body of missing Louisville woman, Carrie L. Ruffra, that was recovered from the Ohio River has been positively identified by the Louisville Medical Examiner's Office. The cause of death has been determined to be suicide by drowning. Our investigation supports the medical examiner's findings. There is no evidence of foul play and no other person or persons appear to have been involved in Mrs. Ruffra's disappearance or death. Next of kin has been notified. Det. Aaron Gabhart is the investigator in this case.
