Fatal Collision on KY 100 in Franklin, KY

(Bowling Green, Ky.) - On Saturday, January 21, 2012 at approximately 2:27 pm, Kentucky State Police Post 03 responded to a motor vehicle collision with injuries on KY 100 east in the city limits of Franklin, KY, involving a Franklin City Police Officer.

Trooper Terry Alexander's preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle being operated by LaDonna S. Southard (30) of Franklin, KY, was traveling east bound on KY 100 and crossed the center line for unknown reasons and struck Officer Kelly Mayfield (36) of Bowling Green, KY, who was traveling west bound on KY 100 in his marked police cruiser.

A witness, who was traveling west bound on KY 100 in front of Officer Mayfield stated that he observed Mrs. Southard's vehicle cross the center line. This witness stated he swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting Mrs. Southard's vehicle head on. Officer Mayfield was traveling directly behind this witness and was unable to avoid being struck head on by Mrs. Southard's vehicle. There was also a witness who was traveling west bound on KY 100 behind Officer Mayfield who also observed Mrs. Southard cross the center line and strike Officer Mayfield's police cruiser head on.

LaDonna S. Southard was pronounced dead at the scene by the Simpson County Deputy Coroner Patrick Crafton. Officer Kelly Mayfield had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported by ambulance to the Bowling Green Medical Center where he was initially treated for several broken bones. Officer Mayfield was later transported to the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN by ambulance for further treatment for his injuries. His condition is listed as stable.

Officer Mayfield was on duty at the time of the accident and was responding to a non-emergency complaint. Officer Mayfield did not have his emergency equipment activated and was traveling with traffic.

LaDonna Southard and Officer Kelly Mayfield were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this accident.

Officer Mayfield has been employed by the Franklin Police Department since February of 2003.

Trooper Terry Alexander is leading this investigation which is still ongoing.

Trooper Terry Alexander was assisted at the scene by the Franklin Police Department, Simpson County Sheriff's Office, Franklin/Simpson Fire Department and Franklin/Simpson Ambulance Service.
