Murfreesboro, TN Man Killed on US 431

Dunmor, KY. (Muhlenberg County) ? The Kentucky State Police investigated a fatality that occurred on US 431, approximately four miles north of Dunmor, on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 9:30 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Nathan Shemwell, age 29 of Greenville, KY, was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Impala southbound on US 431 when his vehicle exited the right shoulder of the roadway. Charles Ragland, age 70 of Bethpage, TN, was operating a 1997 Toyota pickup truck northbound on US 431. Mr. Ragland and his passenger (brother), David Ragland, age 65 of Murfreesboro, TN, stopped to render aid to Mr. Shemwell. David Ragland exited the vehicle.

Jesse Banks, age 59 of Russellville, KY, was operating a 2000 GMC dump truck southbound on US 431. As David Ragland was standing in the roadway, Mr. Banks exited a curve and applied his brakes. Mr. Banks lost control of the vehicle on the wet roadway. The dump truck struck David Ragland and the Toyota pickup truck.

The Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office pronounced David Ragland dead at the scene. Charles Ragland, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported via ambulance to the Muhlenberg Community Hospital where he was treated and released. Mr. Banks was not injured. Mr. Shemwell was not injured. Both men were wearing seatbelts.

Trooper Jerry Knight is continuing the investigation. Tpr. Ben Sawyer, KSP CVE Sgt. Del Miller, the Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department, the Beechmont Volunteer Fire Department, the Drakesboro Volunteer Fire Department, the Dunmor Volunteer Fire Department, the Greenville Police Department, Muhlenberg County EMS, and the Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene.
