Fatal Collision Collision on US 431 in Muhlenberg County

Date of News Release: 01/11/2012

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- Marty Garrett, age 45 of Greenville, KY, was operating a 2006 Mack tractor-trailer (coal truck) northbound on US 431. The trailer was empty. David Blake, age 32 of Belton, KY, was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Z71 pickup truck southbound on US 431. As Mr. Blake's vehicle was traveling southbound, it veered into the northbound lane and struck the coal truck head-on.

After striking the coal truck, Mr. Blake's vehicle struck a guardrail and came to rest in the northbound lane facing west. The coal truck caught fire and came to rest in the roadway blocking both lanes of travel. Mr. Blake was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Muhlenberg County Coroner Tony Armour. Mr. Garrett was transported by a privately owned vehicle to the Muhlenberg Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Trooper Brandon McPherson is investigating the fatal collision that occurred on US 431 approximately 1/2 mile south of Central City on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 8:25 a.m. Trooper Craig Engler, Trooper Mark Combs, KSP CVE Officer Larry Johnston, the Central City Police Department, the Central City Fire Department, Muhlenberg County Emergency Management, the Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways, and the Environmental Protection Agency assisted at the scene.
