Weather Advisory and Abandoned Vehicle Notice
Date of News Release: 12/25/2012
(Hickory, KY) -- In anticipation of the predicted winter storm event, the Kentucky State Police (KSP), Mayfield Post will be assisting the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) by clearing state right-of-ways of any and all abandoned vehicles. This will be done in an effort to promote the safety of the traveling public, and to allow for highway crews to more efficiently respond to snow and drift removal.
If a Trooper finds a vehicle that has been left abandoned in this manner, this vehicle will be removed by a wrecker service in the county in which it is found to be left standing upon the highway. Ownership of the vehicle will be determined by the registration plate or other identification numbers. KSP will then notify the owner of the vehicle, by mail, that the vehicle was found abandoned in violation of Kentucky law. The owner will also be provided with the name and address of the storage facility where the vehicle can be claimed. The removal of the vehicle from the storage facility will involve payment of towing and storage charges. If the vehicle is not claimed within sixty (60) days, it may be sold pursuant to Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 376.275.
The Kentucky State Police wishes to remind motorists that they should dial 911 or 1-800-222-5555 for reporting emergencies only. Motorists who desire updated Kentucky roadway condition information should dial 511 (if in Kentucky) or 1-866-737-3767.
