Thanksgiving Holiday Safety

Date of News Release: 11/18/2012

(Hickory, KY) – Thanksgiving is the most dangerous holiday of the year for motorists, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This includes the four-day holiday driving period surrounding that date when heavy traffic, weather and long distance road trips combine to create severe travel conditions. Often, family celebrations include alcohol, which later evolves into impaired driving. Add that to heavy traffic, and you have a recipe for disaster.

The official 2012 Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period begins at 6 p. m. on Wednesday, November 21st and extends through 11:59 p. m. on Sunday, November 25th, 2012.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety during the holiday period by reporting erratic, impaired or speeding drivers to KSP toll-free hotline at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

In an effort to reduce injury and fatal crashes within the post one area, KSP has comprised a list of high crash roadways for each county within the post one district. Post 1 Crash locations are available on the website at www.kentuckystatepolice.org/posts/press/post_1crash_locations.htm . The roadways were selected based on four years’ worth of collision data for serious injury and fatal crashes in each county. Motorists will notice increased patrol along these routes throughout the remaining calendar year with a zero tolerance approach to occupant restraint, speeding, and DUI offenses. These offenses along with various other careless driving habits continue to be the primary cause of injury and fatal collisions. Below is a list of the roadways which will see heightened enforcement in the post one area. MP indicates the mile marker range for the roadway.
