McCracken County Sheriff's Department Shooting Investigation
Date of News Release: 10/06/2012
(Hickory, Ky.) -- On October 6, at approximately 1100 hours, McCracken County Sheriffs Department received a complaint of a possible suicidal subject in the 300 Block of Oriole Lane. Deputy Jared Rivera responded to the residence and was initially unable to make contact with anyone. A short time later, the resident, Michael Lakin age 50, was observed through a front window brandishing a handgun. Deputy Rivera retreated to the cover of his cruiser, backing it out of the driveway. After taking cover, Deputy Rivera observed Mr. Lakin standing in the front door of the residence, brandishing a handgun and a sword. Mr. Lakin was given several orders to drop the weapons, but advanced on Deputy Rivera's position. Deputy Rivera discharged his patrol rifle, striking Mr. Lakin twice in the upper torso, who then retreated back into the residence. Mr. Lakin was discovered lying just inside the front door and medical assistance was summoned from an ambulance which had been placed on stand-by due to the original call. Mr. Lakin was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in serious condition.
Kentucky State Police is in charge of the investigation and have cited Mr. Lakin with Assault 3rd Degree on a Police Officer. Detective Jerry Jones was assisted on scene by Mercy Ambulance Service and the McCracken County Sheriffs Department.
