Two Arrested in 13 Year Old Murder Investigation: Cold Case Solved

Date of News Release: 10/17/2012

(Henderson, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police has charged two with the murder of four year-old Autumn Michelle Raymond.

On Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Kentucky State Police Detective Michael Smith executed the arrest warrants of Virginia Whitfield and Tony Lear. Whitfield was arrested without incident at her Greenville residence. Lear, who was already lodged (on unrelated charges) at the Daviess County Detention Center in Owensboro, was served the grand jury indictment warrant.

Detective Smith presented this case to the Ohio County Grand Jury on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 after new information was discovered. The grand jury handed down indictment warrants.

Both Virginia Whitfield and Tony Lear were charged with one count of Murder; one count of Arson 1st degree and two counts of Assault 1st degree. All charges are felonies.

Virginia Whitfield has been transported to Ohio County Detention Center in Hartford.

Virginia Whitfield was the mother of Autumn Raymond. Tony Lear was an acquaintance of the family.

The Kentucky State Police says that Autumn Michelle Raymond died on October 4, 1999, from injuries sustained in a fire (Arson) at her residence on Tanner Lane in Beaver Dam, which occurred on September 2, 1999. Two other children in the residence managed to escape the fire; however, they suffered from smoke inhalation. Whitfield and Lear were charged with assault 1st due to their injuries.

The investigation is continuing by the Kentucky State Police and additional arrests are likely in this case.
