Three Vehicle Injury Collision in Ohio County
Date of News Release: 01/09/2012
(Henderson, KY) -- Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Timothy Blankenship had stopped Fred Ford at the 74 mile-marker on the Western Kentucky Parkway (eastbound). Officer Blankenship, who was conducting a roadside commercial vehicle safety inspection, was sitting in his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. For an unknown reason, Robert Thomas, who was traveling eastbound, crossed into the emergency strip side swiping both Officer Blankenship's cruiser and Mr. Ford's 2007 Peterbilt truck and trailer. During the collision, Officer Blankenship's cruiser was shoved and struck Mr. Ford, who was standing next to Officer Blankenship's cruiser. Mr. Thomas's 2010 International truck and box trailer continued approximately 30 yards where it came to final rest in the eastbound ditch.
Mr. Thomas and Mr. Ford were transported by ambulance to Ohio County Hospital in Hartford. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Officer Blankenship was transported by Commercial Vehicle Enforcement to Owensboro Medical Health Systems in Owensboro. Officer Blankenship was checked and then released.
Mr. Thomas was cited for Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle and a registration offence.
Mr. Thomas works for Celadon Transportation based in Indianapolis Indiana. Mr. Ford works for Old School Trucking in Gary Indiana.
Both eastbound lanes were periodically closed; however, the right eastbound lane remained closed for approximately four hours while officers investigated the collision and for clean-up. All eastbound lanes were open at 1:34 p.m.
The investigation is continuing.
