Former Monroe County Deputy Sheriff was Murder

(TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky.) - On August 28th, it was reported that Troopers and Detectives from Post 15 are currently on the scene of a shooting that occurred at approximately 3:15 PM CST on Rush Lane in Monroe County. 82-year-old Herbert Proffitt was pronounced dead at Monroe County Hospital at 4:20 PM CST, the apparent victim of a gunshot wound. Further information will be released as it is made available. Proffitt was a former Monroe County Deputy Sheriff.

On August 29th, it was reported that 81-year-old Charles Hammer of Tompkinsville has been arrested and charged with the Murder of Herbert Proffitt. Hammer was charged at the Tompkinsville Police Department and will be lodged in the Monroe County Jail. Proffitt had served in law enforcement for over 50 years having served terms as the Tompkinsville Police Chief and the Monroe County Sheriff. Kentucky State Police Detective Ricky Brooks is continuing the investigation.
