Death Investigation in Letcher County

Date of News Release: 11/22/2012

(Hazard, Ky) -- On November 21, 2012 Kentucky State Police in Hazard received a call stating someone was attempting to break into a residence in the Gordon community of Letcher County.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the alleged perpetrator, Wayne Duff, was confronted by James Brown at the residence. A verbal altercation occurred between the two and threatening remarks were made toward Mr. Brown. Duff then began to approach Brown and Brown discharged a handgun toward Duff striking him in the chest. Wayne Duff II, age 37, of Cumberland, Ky. was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner.

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation will be presented to a Letcher County Grand Jury. The investigation is continuing by the Kentucky State Police.
