One Man Injured And Another Arrested In Knott County Assault

(Hazard, KY) -- On October 9, 2012 Kentucky State Police in Hazard received a call that a male had been shot at a residence in the Mousie community of Knott County.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, 24 year old Travis Scott of Mousie, was walking through the yard owned by Hillard Smith. Mr. Smith observed Mr. Scott on his property and confronted him with a handgun. After the two communicated for a brief time Mr. Smith fired at the victim striking him in the lower abdomen. Mr. Scott was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment. Hillard Smith, age 28 of Mousie, was arrested for Assault 1st Degree and lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Detention Center. The investigation is continuing by Det. Chris Collins.
