KSP Looking for Spencer County Copper Thieves

(Post 12 Frankfort) -- The Kentucky State Police Frankfort Post is investigating a copper theft from the Kentucky Utilities Electric Substation in Spencer County. On Thursday, June 28, 2012, between the hours of approximately 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm unknown suspects cut a wire fence and gained access to the KU Electric Substation located at 5729 Highgrove Road in Spencer Co.
During the copper theft the suspects cut the wrong ground wire causing three large transformers to explode. Each transformer has a value of approximately $10,000. The suspects were only able to steal a small handful of copper wire prior to the transformers exploding. The copper was valued at approximately $50.00. KU supervisor, Tim Underwood, stated that the suspects will possibly have injuries consistent with severe flash burn to the eyes, a concussion or hearing damage from the explosion, or possible burns to the hands. He stated that the suspects are very lucky to be alive.
The Thieves are facing Theft by Unlawful Taking charges and Criminal Mischief 1st charges when located. The KSP Frankfort Post is asking anyone with information about this theft to call the Frankfort Post at 502-227-2221.
