Driver Cited Passenger Arrested in Shelby County Injury Collision

(Post 12 Frankfort) -- On March 20, 2012, at 5:42 pm, the Kentucky State Police Frankfort Post dispatcher received a call reporting a vehicle traveling westbound on I-64 a high rate of speed and reckless. Troopers from the Frankfort Post located a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, overturned at the 41.4 mile marker on I-64 in Shelby County.
The driver Nathan Herdt, age 25, of Lexington was admitted to the Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville. He has been cited to court for DUI 2nd offense, Possession of an Open Alcoholic Beverage in Motor Vehicle, Failure to Maintain Insurance 1st, Failure to Produce Insurance Card and Failure to Notify DOT of Address Change. A passenger Kerry G. Fira, age 24 of Louisville was arrested for Alcohol Intoxication in a Public Place and lodged in the Shelby County Detention Center.
The collision investigation has revealed that the driver was attempting to pass another vehicle at a high rate of speed and lost control. The vehicle entered the median and collided with the earth embankment causing it to overturn several times. The driver and passenger were both wearing their seat belts.
The collision remains under investigation by KSP Frankfort Post. The condition of the driver is unknown.
